The shadow of the ivory tree
Language, literature and history in Nusantara
by J.J. Ras

Introduction

This book offers a selection of the essays and articles that professor Ras wrote during his scholarly career. The shadow of the ivory tree serves as an hommage to a scholar who played an important role in Leiden South-east Asian studies in the latter part of the twentieth century. Covering a variety of disciplines – anthropology, philology, literary theory, history, linguistics – and dealing with a number of areas in Indonesia, past and present, these writings give the reader an impressive overview of the interests, the vision and the activities of the author.

In may 1992 professor Ras will retire as professor of Javanese studies; it should not come as a surprise that most of the writings in this volume pertain to Java in one way or another. The selection was made in close consultation with the author himself. A chronological order of sorts was followed; there is an occasional overlap in themes and descriptions, inevitable for a ‘work in progress’.

The articles were reproduces in their original form; spelling has been made uniform, print errors have been corrected. An exeption was made for the two articles ‘Lange consonanten in enige Indonesische talen’ which were made into one.

A special word of thanks to drs. I. Supriyanto and mr. S. Koolhof who did the preparatory work. We also wish to thank HES Publishers, KITLV Press, and the editors of the Indonesian-Netherlands Cooperation in Islamic Studies and the Review of Indonesian and Malayan Affairs for their permission to reprint the articles which they originally published.
